FEBRUARY 2008 BAR EXAM RESULTS

The State Board of Law Examiners congratulates all the candidates who have passed the February 2008 New York State bar examination. Although every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of this list, each applicant must rely on the official notification (via U.S. Mail) as to whether he or she has passed the examination.

The New York State Board of Law Examiners examined 3,589 candidates during the two days of testing conducted on February 26-27, 2008. Of the 3,589 candidates examined in February 2008, including U.S. domestic-educated, foreign-educated candidates, first-time and repeat takers, 1,777 passed the examination for an overall passing rate of 49.5%, an increase of 5.3% over the results on the February 2007 bar examination.

Of the 1,445 candidates taking the examination for the first time, 925 passed for an overall first time passing rate of 64%. The passing rate for graduates of ABA approved law schools who took the examination for the first- time was 76.3%. The passing rate for foreign educated candidates who took the examination for the first-time was 43.1%.

Successful candidates are certified for admission to the Appellate Division and must appear before the Committee on Character and Fitness appointed by the appropriate Appellate Division to be examined as to their character and fitness before being admitted to the bar. Candidates are not certified for admission until the Board receives proof that they have successfully completed the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination as required by the Rules of the New York State Court of Appeals for the Admission of Attorneys and Counselors at Law.
