JULY 2007 BAR EXAM RESULTS
The State Board of Law Examiners congratulates all the candidates who have passed the July 2007 New York State bar examination. Although every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of this list, each applicant must rely on the official notification (via U.S. Mail) as to whether he or she has passed the examination.

The New York State Board of Law Examiners examined a record 10,907 candidates during the two days of testing conducted on July 24-25, 2007. Passing rates for various groups of candidates, as compared to the results on the July 2006 bar examination, are demonstrated on the chart below.
Of the 10,907 candidates examined in July 2007, including U.S. domestic-educated, foreign-educated candidates, first time and repeat takers, 7,701 passed the examination for an overall passing rate of 70.6%, an increase of 1.1% from the July 2006 examination. Of the 9,152 candidates taking the examination for the first time, 7,241 passed for an overall first time passing rate of 79.1%.
Among the July candidate pool there were 8,269 candidates who graduated from American Bar Association-approved law schools; 6,727 of them passed for a passing rate of 81.4%, an increase of 2.1% from the July 2006 examination. Among the ABA graduates, 7,415 were taking the examination for the first time; 6,449 passed for a first time passing rate of 87%, which is an increase of 0.3% from the July 2006 examination.
4,238 of the candidates examined were graduates of the 15 ABA-approved law schools located in New York State; 3,477 of them passed for a passing rate of 82.0%, an increase of 3.5% from the July 2006 examination. Among the graduates of the 15 New York law schools, 3,748 were taking the examination for the first time in July 2007. The passing rate for graduates of New York's 15 law schools taking the bar examination for the first time in July 2007 was 88.2%. This is the highest passing rate in memory for graduates of New York law schools and represents a 1.5% increase over the passing rate for the same group who took the July 2006 bar examination.
4,031 of the candidates examined were graduates of ABA-approved law schools located outside of New York; 3,250 passed for a passing rate of 80.6%. Among the graduates of ABA-approved law schools located outside of New York, 3,667 were taking the examination for the first time in July 2007; 3,144 passed for a passing rate of 85.7%.
There were 2,625 candidates (24% of the total number of candidates) who qualified to sit for the examination based on their foreign legal education; 971 passed for a passing rate of 37.0%, an increase of 1.1% from the July 2006 examination. Among the foreign educated candidates, 1,736 were taking the examination for the first time; 791 passed for a first time passing rate of 45.6%, an increase of 0.4% from last years examination.
Of the 7,701 candidates who passed the July 2007 examination, 6,358 were certified for admission to the Appellate Division. The candidates who were certified for admission must appear before the Committee on Character and Fitness appointed by the Appellate Division in each Judicial District of the State to be examined as to his or her character and fitness. The remaining 1,343 candidates who were successful on the bar examination will be certified for admission upon receipt by the Board of proof that they have successfully completed the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination as required by the Rules of the New York State Court of Appeals for the Admission of Attorneys and Counselors at Law.
