JULY 2006 BAR EXAM RESULTS

The State Board of Law Examiners congratulates all the candidates who have passed the July 2006 New York State bar examination. Although every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of this list, each applicant must rely on the official notification (via U.S. Mail) as to whether he or she has passed the examination.

The New York State Board of Law Examiners has completed grading the July 2006 bar examination. The Board examined 10,448 candidates for admission to the bar at the examination held on July 25-26, 2006, the most that it has ever examined at any administration of the bar examination. As is demonstrated on the chart below, the overall passing rate and the passing rates for various subgroups of candidates increased over the passing rates achieved by candidates on the July 2005 bar examination.

Of the 10,448 candidates examined in July 2006, 7,258 passed the examination for an overall passing rate of 69.5%, an increase of 2.5% from the July 2005 examination. Of the 8,660 applicants taking the examination for the first time, 6,873 passed for an overall first time passing rate of 79.4%, an increase of 3.5% from the July 2005 examination.

Among the July candidates were 8,081 candidates who graduated from ABA approved law schools with Juris Doctor degrees; 6,411 of them passed for a passing rate of 79.3%, an increase of 3.2% from the July 2005 examination. Among the ABA graduates, 7,132 were taking the examination for the first time; 6,184 of them passed for a first time passing rate of 86.7%, which is an increase of 4% from the July 2005 examination.

Juris Doctor graduates from the 15 law schools located in New York State accounted for 4,401 of the candidates; 3,457 of them passed for a passing rate of 78.5%, an increase of 4.8 % from the July 2005 examination. Among the graduates of New York law schools, 3,820 were taking the examination for the first time; 3,312 passed for a first time passing rate of 86.7%, an increase of 5.7% from last year’s examination.

There were 2,355 candidates (22.5% of the total number of candidates) who qualified to sit for the examination based on their foreign legal education; 846 passed for a passing rate of 35.9%, an increase of 2.8% from the July 2005 examination. Among the foreign educated candidates, 1,523 were taking the examination for the first time; 688 passed for a first time passing rate of 45.2%, which represents an increase of 2.3% from last year’s examination.

Of the 7,258 candidates who passed the examination, 6,475 were certified for admission to the Appellate Division. The candidates who were certified for admission must appear before the Committee on Character and Fitness appointed by the Appellate Division in each Judicial District of the State to be examined as to his or her character and fitness. The remaining 783 candidates who were successful on the bar examination will be certified for admission upon receipt by the Board of proof that they have successfully completed the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination as required by the Rules of the New York State Court of Appeals for the Admission of Attorneys and Counselors at Law.
