IMPORTANT PRESS RELEASE
NOVEMBER 30, 2001 - FOR RELEASE ON RECEIPT
The New York State Board of Law Examiners today announced revised results of the July 24-25, 2001 bar examination. On November 21, 2001, the Board announced that 6475 of the 9194 applicants who took the examination passed. The Board has now discovered that there was a computer programming error in the computation of the final scores of certain applicants. The Board has revised the scoring of the examination and is today announcing that 6664 applicants passed the July bar examination.
In accordance with the present Board Rule, after an initial computation of the scores, all the written answers of every applicant whose initial total score is within ten points above or below the pass mark of 660 are reread by a different grader of the same question. The two resulting scaled scores are then averaged, the total score recomputed, and the result becomes the applicants final examination score, from which there is no appeal.
It has now been determined that due to a computer program error, the results of the two readings of the written portion of the examinations of applicants who fell within the reread range on the July 2001 bar examination were not averaged. To remedy this error, the Board has determined, for this examination only, that it will pass all applicants who achieved a passing score on either the initial grading or the regrading, thus demonstrating minimum competence on one reading of the examination.
Scores for every applicant have been rechecked, and any applicant whose final result changed is being notified by overnight delivery service. A revised list of successful applicants is being posted on the Boards Website immediately.
