The State Board of Law Examiners has completed grading the papers written by applicants for admission to the Bar at the examination held on July 28-29, 1998. Of the 8,788 candidates examined, 6,160 passed the examination. Of the 7,392 applicants taking the examination for the first time, 5,761 passed.

Each of the 5,455 successful applicants who were certified for admission must appear before the Committee on Character and Fitness appointed by the Appellate Division in each Judicial District of the State to be examined as to his or her character and fitness.

The remaining 705 candidates who were successful on the bar examination will be certified for admission upon receipt by the Board of proof that they have successfully completed the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination as required by the Rules of the New York State Court of Appeals for the Admission of Attorneys and Counselors at law.

The Board also announced that for the July 1998 examination it used Xmn8R, a software product manufactured by ExamSoft Company which is designed to assure test security, for approximately 30 applicants who required the use of a computer as part of special accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act. This pilot project was considered successful. The Board will use the product again in connection with the special accommodations for the February and July 1999 examinations, and is studying the possibility of making the use of laptops an option for the general pool on the February 2000 examination.
