FEBRUARY 2007 BAR EXAM RESULTS

The State Board of Law Examiners congratulates all the candidates who have passed the February 2007 New York State bar examination. Although every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of this list, each applicant must rely on the official notification (via U.S. Mail) as to whether he or she has passed the examination.

The New York State Board of Law Examiners has completed grading the February 2007 bar examination. The Board examined 3,538 candidates for admission to the bar at the examination held on February 27-28, 2007.

Of the 3,538 candidates examined in February 2007, 1,566 passed the examination for an overall passing rate of 44.3%, a decrease of 1.6% from the February 2006 examination. Although the overall passing rate decreased slightly from last year’s winter exam, as is demonstrated on the chart below, the passing rate for all first time takers and for graduates of ABA approved law schools increased slightly from the passing rates achieved by those groups on the February 2006 bar examination. Of the 1,418 candidates taking the examination for the first time, 866 passed for an overall first time passing rate of 61.1%, an increase of 0.2% from the February 2006 examination.

Among the February candidate pool there were 2,098 candidates who graduated from ABA approved law schools with Juris Doctor degrees; 1,150 of them passed for a passing rate of 54.8%, an increase of 0.3% from the February 2006 examination. Among the ABA graduates, 927 were taking the examination for the first time; 688 of them passed for a first time passing rate of 74.2%, which is an increase of 0.3% from the February 2006 examination.

There were 1,424 candidates (40% of the total number of candidates) who qualified to sit for the examination based on their foreign legal education; 414 passed for a passing rate of 29%, a decrease of 1.5% from the February 2006 examination. Among the foreign educated candidates, 485 were taking the examination for the first time; 176 passed for a first time passing rate of 36.3%, a decrease of 1.2% from last year’s examination.

There were 12 candidates who qualified for the bar examination on the basis of Law Office Study; 1 passed for a passing rate of 8.3%. There were also 4 candidates who qualified on the basis of graduation from an unapproved law school in the United States; 1 passed for a passing rate of 25%.

Of the 3,538 candidates who passed the examination, 1,082 were certified for admission to the Appellate Division. The candidates who were certified for admission must appear before the Committee on Character and Fitness appointed by the Appellate Division in each Judicial District of the State to be examined as to his or her character and fitness. The remaining 484 candidates who were successful on the bar examination will be certified for admission upon receipt by the Board of proof that they have successfully completed the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination as required by the Rules of the New York State Court of Appeals for the Admission of Attorneys and Counselors at Law.
