Becoming a Proctor For The NYS Bar Examination
DEFINITION AND JOB DESCRIPTION
Under general direction and supervision, proctors assist the staff
of the State Board of Law Examiners in the administration of the New
York bar examination.
REQUIREMENTS
- At least 18 years of age
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Knowledge of basic rules of vocabulary, grammar, punctuation, and arithmetic
- Communicate effectively and courteously
- Proficient in the English language
- Follow directions accurately
- Work with people under stressful conditions in a calm and courteous manner
- Stand for 75% of the time
- Lift up to 40 lbs
- Work for 10-12 hours a day (for 2 consecutive days)
- Attend scheduled orientation and training sessions
Preference is given to experience as a teacher, teacher aide, teacher assistant or individuals with experience proctoring examinations. Generally, the work hours are 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM and the standard rate of pay is $120 per day.
The bar exam is administered in New York City, White Plains,
Albany, Saratoga Springs and Buffalo. Currently, the Board has
openings for proctors in Buffalo and White Plains.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Monitor 1 - 40 applicants
- Complete various forms pertinent to the examination process
- Assist in taking attendance and check admission tickets and photo identification
- Direct applicants to assigned seating
- Distribute, collect and accurately account for examination materials
- Observe applicants while they take the examination
